Mission
The mission of the Department of Information Technology is to contribute to the development of the e-economy, which is understood as an economy where business processes are realized through computer and communication networks. The e-economy requires both new information technologies and new business models. DIT is involved with the development of both with an emphasis on technology, as the DIT research staff has technical qualifications in computer science and engineering. The integration of computer science and management science is a challenge for the development of e-business. DIT is involved in seeking solutions to this challenge.
Activities
The Department's activities encompass: * research, * teaching, * software development and * consultancy.
Research
DIT is involved in both research and industrial projects. The goal of the research projects is the development of new e-business technologies. The aim of the industrial projects is to implement e-business technologies into the business processes. The projects are sponsored by the European Commission within the Framework Programs, the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as well as Polish, European and American institutions and corporations.
Teaching Polish students
The courses focus on involving the students from the outset and developing both their initiative and inventiveness. 650 students follow the lectures given by Prof. W. Cellary and have assignments using the DIT's computer labs where they learn how to use the Internet for business purposes. By the second year, during seven semesters, students may specialize in e-business. Specialization in e-business provides students with two qualifications: interdisciplinary knowledge within the intersection of computer engineering and management science, and good preparation for international cooperation, because lectures and exercises are given in the English language. Moreover, in the fourth year, DIT offers specialized courses in e-business applications to capital investment and financial markets. Prof. W. Cellary individually cooperates with up to 24 students per year by supervising their master's theses.
Teaching foreign students
DIT also provides courses in e-business in English, devoted to foreign students studying at the Poznan University of Economics, within the framework of the European Union Socrates Program. Students from Germany, Finland, Portugal, France, United Kingdom, and Ukraine follow these courses.
Awards
In 2000, Intel Corporation invited Polish universities to participate in a competition aimed at identifying the best curriculum offered on the e-economy. Of the 16 universities that participated, DIT was declared the winner and received a prize of $75,000 for Intel equipment. The president of Poland, a patron of the competition, presented the award. In 2001 the system "Internet Multilingual e-Order Management System e-MAX-ML", developed by DIT in cooperation with Philips Lighting Poland received two prizes: the Polish Logistics Association Award in the category of excellent research achievements within logistics science, and the second prize in the "Award of Logistics Excellence 2001" Contest by European Logistics Association.
