Personalized, Immersive Sports TV Experience

Personalized, Immersive Sports TV Experience

PISTE (IST-1999-11172) – Personalized, Immersive Sports TV Experience – was a three-year international European project to develop an interactive television system addressing the needs of broadcasters and home viewers that will transform TV watching into an immersive interactive experience during the coverage of sports events. PISTE uses mixed 2D and 3D MPEG-4 content dynamically created on the server in near-real-time during the event.

Content production is based on the Flex-VR approach. Prior to the sporting event, content designers use 2D and 3D visual template editors to prepare the models. During the event coverage, the broadcasting staff provides scene generation parameters filling in the models with actual data such as video clips, animation sequences, and statistics, all retrieved from a production database. The Flex-VR based production method significantly reduces content creation time during the event while still preserving high quality of the contents.
